7 Ways Using Twitter Could Improve Your Health

If you’re on a quest to improve your health, a quick Google search will return countless how-to-guides.

But, the information overload can make change feel pretty daunting…just where do you begin?

If you’re not sure what Twitter is here’s a brief def:

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service which allows its you to send and read updates known as Tweets. These are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, which are displayed on your profile page and also delivered to your followers. You can send and receive Tweets via the Twitter website, SMS, or external applications.

So, just how can you use Twitter to improve your health. Here are 7 possibilities:

1. Gain new perspective

When you think of the many difficulties you may have trying to improve your health, it’s very easy to start thinking “woe is me,” and get a little inward looking.

But, by using Twitter you’ll be able to connect with others who are struggling too.

This will help you to see things from another person’s point of view, it’ll give you a chance to move forward in your own development, and it’ll help you to feel like you’re not alone.

2. Create accountability

Personally I see Twitter as a great way to publicly record your goals and therefore create a certain amount of accountability for your actions.

If you struggle with goal setting perhaps you’ve been trying to achieve too much in the past, and therefore Twitter could be just the thing for you.

3. Be more focused

The great thing about using Twitter is that it forces you to be brief, clear and to the point – remember you’re only allowed to use 140 characters per message.

So, what you end up with is a clear and concise description of your thoughts at that particular time, which will help to focus your mind on what you really want to achieve.

4. Share and get support

Think of it, you could Tweet about what you eat, your daily exercise routine, your weekly weight loss, things you’re finding difficult or things that have gone well for you.

You can also Tweet about websites, books, or podcasts you’ve found useful in the hope that it will help others too.

You’ll probably find that your Twitter “friends” are very supportive, and will also share their tips and advice to help you out and encourage you further.

5. Ask questions

Twitter is a great place for getting almost instant answers to any question that is bothering you. If you tend to type lots of questions into Google, you could also use Twitter in this way to find answers.

You’ll find many Twitter users are well informed, and you’ll get a range of different answers to what you’d normally get from Google.

A simple to the point Tweet such as, “Hey guys! Can any share ideas for healthy snacks?” will usually return a number of interesting comments.

Or you could try, “I’m really struggling today with motivation to exercise…tips anyone?”

6. Get help from experts

If you follow a number of blogs you’ll probably find they also have a Twitter account.

So, by subscribing you’ll be able to keep updated with their latest Tweets.

If you’re a bit stuck for time this can be particularly good because most users will Tweet their latest posts.

This means you can choose easily which articles are of particular interest to you, and click through to the website to check it out.

You’ll also be able to pick up short tips from the favorite “experts” on a daily basis.

If you want to find a particular topic being discussed in Twitter, try using the Twitter search. For example you can search for “weight loss tips” and you’ll find all the latest references to this topic on Twitter.

7. Have fun

I’d describe Twitter as one big party! You can check in and out of the fun all day to catch up with the latest and share your thoughts too.

So, use it to your advantage, share your thoughts, help others, but most of all have fun and enjoy the whole Twitter experience!

I’m by no means an expert on Twitter, and I’m pretty sure there are countless other ways you could use it to help you on your journey to better health.

But, I hope this has made you at least think about the possibilities.

    I must confess: Twitter is one technology that I’m going to let pass me by. I just don’t have the time to twitter, or read others’ twits (tweets?).

    By the same token, let me say that I was slow to switch from vinyl albums and cassette tapes over to buying CDs. I wish I had done that five years earlier than I did. I’m not what you call an “early adopter”!

    LOL..yes it’s certainly not for everyone. In fact it took me a while to get into it too, but for many people it is a really useful resource.

    Not really on the same level, but I feel a bit like you with my Dell laptop. Hubby would like me to stitch over to Mac and I’m trying to hold out as long as I can – don’t really want to learn a whole new way of doing things!! 🙂

    Im 20 years old from barkshire. You info from your web is exellent for the child section, it realy helped me alot anyway… I think it has something to do with the fact i already have two kids. ( twins atualy) and i dont have a partener to help me with them. So i never have time to eat any more. Although my partner is coming back from his work trip next week. I have three nanies coming tomorrow so i hope that i can have some time to “stuff my face”
